Chinese tourist caught on camera stealing backpack

Chinese tourist Jose Manuel Bautista was arrested Tuesday after a video of him stealing a backpack went viral online.

Bautista, who was in Mexico City for the World Tourism Organization’s annual World Tourism Conference, was spotted stealing the backpack from a luggage rack in the airport’s Terminal B area at around 10:30 p.m. local time (8:30 a.m., EDT) according to the Mexican government.

A customs official in Mexico told ABC News that Bautistas bag was found with items belonging to another traveler.

The incident occurred on the same day that Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto visited China to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

China has expressed its outrage over the incident.

In a statement to ABC News, China’s Foreign Ministry said, “China strongly condemns the crime and strongly calls on all countries to respect human rights and dignity.”

“The Chinese side will thoroughly investigate this matter, take appropriate action and fully cooperate with all relevant countries and international organizations,” the statement added.
